Howard Hughes Medical Institute: Medical Student Fellowship
Description: The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) allows medical students to spend a year conducting full-time research in specified fields of study. Students are also supported for a second year of research and up to two years of medical studies (only for HHMI fellows who received support for the initial year of research training).
Qualifications: Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. medical school and conduct fellowship research at a U.S. institution.
Amount: An annual stipend of $21,000; a fellow's allowance of $5,500; and a research allowance of $5,500.
Application Process: Application includes: academic transcripts, curriculum vitae, career plans, research experience, research plan, a letter of reference from the dean, two letters of reference from people who are familiar with the applicant's talents and abilities, and endorsements from a mentor and co-mentor.
