George J. Mitchell
Description: The George J. Mitchell Scholarships, administered by the US-Ireland Alliance, are named in honor of former U.S. Senator who served as Chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland. Under his leadership, a historic accord ending decades of conflict was agreed upon by the governments of Ireland and the U.K. and the political parties of Northern Ireland. The scholarship offers one year of post-graduate study at any institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Applicants are selected based on their academic abilities, leadership, and community service.
Qualifications: Students must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 years old. Applicants need to have completed their bachelor's degree before the scholarship begins. Students from all disciplines are eligible to apply, but the proposed course of study must be available at the university elected by the applicant.
Amount: A living expenses stipend, tuition, housing, and international travel.
Application Process: Students may register to apply online. A preliminary elimination will be made based on the student's transcripts, personal essay, and 5-8 recommendations. Twenty finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. for an interview on November 20. Photos are required with the application. Students are encouraged to learn about the program by reviewing the website's profiles of past Scholars and their online journals.
