Description: The Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholarships are open to students distinguished not only in academics but also "in qualities of mind and in qualities of person"; Rhodes scholars have the potential to give effective service to the world.
Qualifications: Have a 3.9+ GPA, be a U.S. citizen (there are Rhodes Scholarships for international students-see website), be at least 18, but not yet 24 years old, and have completed a bachelor's degree before October 1. Scholars are selected based on proven academic achievement, integrity of character, interest in and respect for others, leadership, athletic skills, and the energy to fully use their talents. Participation in sports is encouraged, but not necessary if applicants are able to demonstrate their physical vigor to make an effective contribution to the world in other ways.
Amount: The scholarship pays all tuition and fees, plus a maintenance allowance of not less than £9,484 per
Application Process: Submit two copies of the following: "application blank," transcripts, list of activities and honors, a personal essay describing academic and other interests and the specifics of the proposed study (1,000 words). After reviewing the applications, some students will be selected to receive an institutional endorsement. All applications will be mailed to the Secretary of the appropriate State Committee of Selection.
