IIE: Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Description: The Institute of International Education (IIE) offers a congressionally-funded program that allows students to pursue study abroad worldwide. The program is intended to fund students who have been traditionally under-represented. Please note that sometimes the Gilman makes available $3,000-$8,000 Critical Need Language Supplements.
Qualifications: Applicants must be undergraduate students, U.S. citizens, and currently be receiving a Pell grant. Funded students are usually: studying in non-traditional locations, have high financial need, attending a community college, from diverse ethnic backgrounds, have disabilities, and are from the non-traditional age group. Students may apply for funding to any country except for Cuba and those currently under U.S. Department of State Travel Warning.
Amount: Up to $5,000.
Length: The length of the study abroad program (4 weeks to one academic year).
Application Process: Students may only apply if the study abroad program they are accepted to is credit-eligible, for a single country, and lasts between four weeks and one academic year. Students must e-mail a rough draft of their application essays to the BYU Gilman Advisor prior to completing the online application.
